If a food business operator (FBO) is involved in the manufacturing, sale, storage etc of the food articles and the annual sale is less than Rs.12 Lakh, the application made to the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the license thus issued is called as FSSAI Basic Registration. 

If a food business operator (FBO), whether an individual or an entity, is engaged in the manufacturing of food articles or into packaging, storage, retailing, transportation of food articles and the annual turnover is between Rs.14 Lakh to Rs.20 Crore, the applicant is required to apply online for the FSSAI State License. 

If a food business operator (FBO), whether an individual or an entity, is engaged in the manufacturing of food articles or into packaging, storage, retailing, transportation of food articles and the annual turnover is more than Rs.20 crore or the business has multiple units in different States, then the Business is required to apply online for FSSAI Central License.

The food business operator (FBO) is required to apply online at the FSSAI official portal. He would be asked to upload company documents and provide details of the manufacturing process of the food business. Also, the Government fee is deposited online. The application is forwarded to the concerned Food Inspector, who conducts the inspection. After the queries raised during the inspection are satisfactorily answered, the FSSAI Certificate is issued. 

The Government fee for FSSAI Basic registration is Rs.100 per year and in one application, Govt fee for maximum five years can be submitted. The FSSAI certificate thus issued would be valid for five years. 

For online application for FSSAI State License, the annual fee for trading in food business is Rs.2000 per year, which may increase to Rs.3,000 for milk business, meat business or a manufacturing and packaging food business. The Government Fee for maximum of 5 years can be submitted in one FSSAI online Application. The certificate thus issued would have the validity of five years. 

For online application for FSSAI Central License, the Government fee is Rs.7,500 per year and can be submitted for maximum five years. The resultant FSSAI Central License would have the validity period of five years.

In some cases, if the usage of water is involved in the process of manufacturing of food articles, the concerned Food Inspector may demand that a laboratory report of the water used be submitted. The water testing laboratory may charge you between Rs.3,000 to Rs.5,000
